Worcester County SA tribute to Alan Bartlett MBE
1945 – 2024
Many of you will remember Alan Bartlett as an elder member of Worcester County SA. He was always present at the Annual General Meetings. Sadly, Alan passed away Friday 3rd June.
Alan was a fountain of knowledge about swimming and there was nothing that he didn’t know. He was always open to giving advice, guidance, and his views, upon which you could count on being right.
Alan started his swimming life in 1952 when he joined Stourbridge Swimming Club as a 7-year-old swimmer. By the age of 16 years, he had joined the committee and at the age of 21 years he was a member of Worcester County SA. In 1972 he was made Chairman of Stourbridge until 1979, when Alan was made President.
Alan became President of Worcester County SA in 1983 and during that year he moved to Leamington Spa. His career at County level saw him take on several roles including Officials Secretary, Development Coordinator, Secretary and County Welfare Officer and between 1974 and 1985 he was secretary to the County Swimming Committee.
Alan continued to progress throughout the Region, being on the Regional Management Board in 2005 for 10 years and then President from 2008 – 2009.
The next step for Alan was national positions where he was Vice President of the ASA from 2008 – 2009. Due to ill health Alan was unable to take up his Presidency the following year.
Alan also qualified for numerous roles poolside. Swimming Official 1967 – 2007, ASA Timekeeper and Judge 1967 and other roles such as referee, FINA Masters Swimming Official between 1999 and 2007. He was also a Swimming Officials Examiner between 1981 and 2010.
On 2006 ASA presented Alan with the Harold Fern Award, a prestigious award given to those that have made the most outstanding contribution at National and International level.
He was awarded the MBE for his outstanding contribution and dedication to swimming in 2015, an award that he was extremely proud to receive.
There is no doubt that Alan was an extremely well-respected stalwart of Club, County, Regional and National swimming. His experience, knowledge and commitment are a wonderful example to us all.
Alan will be sadly missed by all who knew him and on behalf of the whole of the County I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family.
